Thank you to everyone for the advice on hydration. I'm going to keep experimenting and see what works best. Today I just held by bottle of G2 and it worked out OK.
Yesterday I met up with my local knitting group (and no it's not a bunch of old ladies) at a bakery. Another older woman (she was maybe in her 60s or 70s) comes up from behind me and asks what we are all knitting. Since I'm working on the 2nd sock of a pair, I had the first completed sock in front of me. This woman - a total stranger - says "Oh how cute!", picks up my finished sock, and walks back to her table with it!!!! As everyone around me says "SHE TOOK YOUR SOCK!" I turn around and see the woman showing the sock to everyone at her table. After a minute she came back with it. Good thing too because you know you shouldn't take anything from a table of women who all have knitting needles in their hands. Obviously this woman's mom never told her to ask first before just taking.
Hope everyone has a good week!

Yum, candy during the run. During the Rock'n'Roll Marathon they handed out jolly ranchers at one point :) SUGAR!
She took your sock! Crazy lady! Don't get between a knitter and her socks. Ha, that sounds funny if read out of context.
The super cute glasses are coming this Friday I believe. Can't wait! And I am totally down for getting together for races :) That would be fun! We'll have to plan one out sometime hehe.
oooooh.
I am a runner at heart then.
I always have a stash o'the bears (or worms...or fish) on hand!
Happy monday.

I am going to have to try the gummy bears on my runs. Sometime the gels or block are just too much for me. thanks for the tip.
I am LMAO about the lady who took your sock. I can just picture a table full of ladies with knitting needles ready for a brawl.
Jelly beans are my thing. (I'm also a fan of M&Ms. (Specially on really long runs.)
As for bottle holders and the like, it's really trial and error. I've just switched to a back pack type holder but I haven't gone more than 8 miles with it. (It's hard to get at the Gu is my problem.)
It's so stupidly hot. I hate this weather.
I love that you just happened to have gummy bears on hand! I haven't had those in a LONG time.
I have a pleothra of hydration devices -- amphipod belt with little bottles, one belt that has one big bottle in the back, and a bottle with a hand strap. (I also have 3 different styles of camelbaks, including the waist one, but have never used any of them for running.)
I find the hand held bottle to be the most annoying. The sloshing and the added weight bothers me. Maybe if I had one in each hand I'd like it better, but I doubt it.
The belt with the little bottles I find to be the most comfortable. I really forget it's there. On the one I have the bottles can be moved around or the clips can be removed totally. It has a pouch big enough for my phone, keys, spare money, etc. I also bought a 2nd pouch so I can take along a camera! It's nice to be able to have different fluids along (typically one water and two water/gatorade combos). Also, this one has a size adjustment, some are set-sizes which makes a difference if you're losing a lot of weight.
I use the belt with the one big bottle on weekday runs. It's not quite as comfy as the little bottle belt since all the weight is in the one spot in the back. Also I notice the water sloshing some. But it's just easier to fill one bottle & be off.
Stay cool!
(And hydrated!)
HeHe -- I just read the article you linked to and got a chuckle from the thought of trying to run and chew gum.
I'm not sure if I could do that! I think I would either:
- swallow the gum
- choke to death
- bite my tounge (probably off)
- accidently spit the gum on myself or someone else
- become discombobulated, trip & fall.
I might try it just to see if I can do it successfully without an ambulance ride being involved.
Gummy bears sound like a great idea. I like the size of them too!
Cute post! I love gummy bears. Excuse me a moment while I go get a snack.
I'm totally going to try the gummy bear thing (although I love sour gummy worms the best). I really noticed hunger on my long run this weekend. I use the hydration belt, but it's been giving me trouble with my pierced belly button lately. This just started about a month ago. I never had any problems before. I'm not sure what changed.
She just up and TOOK YOUR SOCK?!?!?!?!? The nerve!!!
I HEART gummi bears! (Can't handle the worms or fish or eyeballs or any of the other gummi weirdness my boys love though!) I never thought to try gummis on a run. Thanks for the tip!
I too am experimenting with hydration systems. I can't stand the idea of something else hanging around on my hips (the extra poundage is plenty!) but I'm tired of carrying my handheld.
And someone grabbing my knitting and walking away? Would have found a pair of addi's wrapped around her neck! You are a kinder soul than I.
I run with gum as much as possible. It keeps my mouth from drying out. I'll have to remember the gummies for when I'm training for my half
Yummy gummy bears! Cool that they worked for you. Awesome on getting in those early runs! The G2 is my poison of choice...love it!
I am laughing so hard at the possiblilty of you chasing down granny with the knitting needle for your sock back.
Oooh, gummy bears. Those are tasty! Whenever I used to go for a long cross country ski I'd take along a big bar of chocolate for fuel. Yum.
That's kind of sweet about her taking your sock to show it off- she must've been really impressed by it!
gummy bears and running eh? once my hay fever settles down, I think I'll start running once again
Your group of knitters is feisty! :)
Nice on the gummy bears! I'm still working on the fueling/hydration thing to find what works best!
I also love knitting..I've been trying to get the courage up to go to one of the knitting groups offered at a shop that just opened up a few blocks from my place. Hopefully, soon!
Haha! Crazy old lady. At least you now she really admired your work.
BTW, I tagged you on my blog. Join in if you want.
I can see the attack of 24 size one double pointeds... ha ha - just make sure they're addi turbos and not bamboo.
The nutritional differences between candy and replacements is minimal. I once compared a Snickers to a Power Bar, and they were virtuallyt he same in all regards. One just cost twice as much.
I think the key is to keep trying different replacement things to see what works best for you--but not on race days!
I like GU, but I wish it was more convenient to take a little at a time. Sometimes a whole pack is just too much. I'll have to try gummy bears or Sour Patch Kids (I like a bit a salt) sometime.
more please.
yeah.
I said it.
:)

I've never heard of that! How strange! I never would have thought of Gummy Bears as being a good post-run snack... :)

Ooooooooooooooo that's an awesome link! I'm going to have to print that out. Thanks chica ;D ;D
So I used to get really dry mouth when I played tennis a lot, didn't help that I was queen of three sets. Anyway, one of my coaches once told me to try squeezing a little honey in my mouth between sets and it worked great. Also helped confuse other players. I used to have a honey bear in my bag, but then decided it was kind of messy and used to take "a few" extra hoeny packets from places like starbucks that have them lying around.
That was creative to take gummy bears! One time I took taffy because I was out of everything and I was going to be cycling for 2 hours. I thought if I started to bonk that a piece of candy would work.
