14 Miles, an ice bath, and a cowl

Yesterday I did 14 miles along the same hilly route that I did last week.   This was probably the hardest run for me ever.  It seemed like it took forever for me to get into the groove.  I had to deal with side stitches during the first few miles, and then at mile 4, I had to use the little girls room REALLY BAD.  Thankfully there was a gas station near by, and the restroom was actually pretty clean.  No bathroom pics though - I'll leave those to Marcy.   Around mile 6 or 7, my hamstrings started telling me to give up now, but I wouldn't listen.  I was determined to finish, and in the end, I DID.

When I got home, I took my first ever ice bath.  I followed Bobbi's tips on ice baths, and sipped on a mug of hot chocolate to take my mind off of the cold.  I didn't put as much ice in, but it was still pretty cold.  I figured the true test would be the next day, and if I didn't wake up sore, then I knew ice baths worked for me.  Well, this morning I woke up, and didn't feel sore AT ALL.  I'll be taking ice baths after all my long runs from now on.

I finished knitting the Birthday Cowl.  I used Malabrigo Worsted yarn and the cowl is really pretty. It's a birthday gift for my friend back east, and I know it will keep her warm during the winter.

Hope everyone has a great week, and for those affected by Ike, I'm hoping things get back to normal quickly for you!

14 miles is FARRRR! Congrats! (And yes, ice baths really do work, otherwise we wouldn't all be suffering through them!)

Wow... on so many levels. Wow, that cowl is gorgeous! Wow, 14 miles is freaking far! And wow, an ice bath? Maybe that should be a yikes instead of a wow.

Thanks for commenting on my running query. I currently run three miles three to four times per week, so my mileage is already normally 9-12 miles per week, so the 10% increase rule won't be problematic. I have this fear that because I CAN run three miles, I should ALWAYS run at least that far, or else I'll LOSE it and not be able to run three miles anymore. Silly?

Ice baths rock! Wear a hat too (maybe you can knit one) to stay warm. Nice job on the run and the cowl!

What a fabulous run! Congrats! You'll learn to love those ice baths!!! Way to go!!!

Congratulations on the 14-miler! I'm intrigued by the ice bath because I'm always sore after long runs. I might have to try that!

Ice baths scare me to death. I always think I'm going to do it and just take a cold shower instead. So I give you huge kudos for going with the ice bath. Also CONGRATS on that super long run! That's awesome!

And, as always, I'm SO jealous of your knitting projects!

Congrats, girl! Way to get it done :)

I do appreciate an ice bath after long runs - I finally figured out to put on a sweater & cap before getting in one, but I still curse up a blue streak.

Nice job on the 14 miler! I really need to start picking up my run and adding some longer runs... it's been months since I have ran more than 5 miles!

Glad to hear the ice bath helped. I love ice baths after a long run!

Way to get the long run done. Fourteen miles. Wow!!

That cowl is a great idea!

Congrats on the 14! I've taken a very cold bath but not an ice bath post run before. I can't do anything like that here because all I have access to is a shower stall. Oh well, I'll give it a go when I get back to my regular life...whatever that is.

Btw, your friend is going to love the cowl. I know I do! :) It's a beautiful color.

Excellent job!! On both the run and the cowl!

Bummer on no BR pics though LOL

Great job! To have your hammies begging you to stop, but to push through anyway, is just super!

And the cowl is very pretty. You might be able to wear it for your next ice bath to keep warm...

ICE BATHS! I took them in the winter after my long runs. I hadn't heard about sipping on a hot bev. that would have helped. I was always so chilled, but man they do help.
You are so ready for your half! AWESOME!
Love the cowl. Love Malabrigo yarn.

An ice bath! Wow. That's so cool that it worked for you (I'm way too much of a wuss to try that). 14 miles is fantastic!

I came across your blog through comments and I love the running/knitting combination! I'm a running crocheter, so I feel somewhat of a kinship - great idea to post about your projects! I'll definitely be checking back. Thanks!

Congratulations! You are amazing woman! And the ice bath... it's an experience isn't it? But it helps so much. I'm so proud of you :)

Ahh, I love the calorie count!! :) That's my favorite part of the run. And you did that just after running 12 for the first time, talk about amazing. Anyways, that cowl is AMAZING! you are so creative and crafty, I wish I was more like you :)

Great job on the 14 miles.

I've never done an ice bath (we never have that much ice in the house), but I've found that even sitting in the really cold water that comes out of our taps is enough to ward off major soreness.

OMG...you amaze me girl! I am so jealous & inspired by you!

And YES, please email me & then if you want we can talk on the phone about your career move! I think that's a wonderful idea!!!!

So excited!!!!

14 miles is no small jaunt. And the cowl is gorgeous...

I recently became an ice bath convert. Once you get over the shock it actually feels good. In winter I just sit in the snow bank until I can't stand it anymore.

Knitting, knitting always knitting - I'm so impressed!

I have to tell you that when I first read the title of the blog I thought it said "14 miles, an ice bath and a cow!" That would be a great post, too, I'm guessing. :) And, it would be something I would expect to see around here because we do have many cows (which is probably why I misread the title, right?!).

Happy running, ice bathing and cowl making. Not cow making. That would just be awkward! :)

Wow on the 14. You are doing so awesome! I'm glad the ice bath worked. I've never done one but I'm sure it would be a good idea. The cowl is beautiful. Have a good week.

Yay you!! 14 miles is a BIG deal! What a great half marathon you'll have! And thanks for the hot chocolate idea with the ice bath - that makes it almost worth trying! :D

You are so much the better knitter than me. I've been working on an afghan off and on now for about 3 years. I wonder if i'll ever finish it.

Thank you so much for reading my blog and your nice words these last few days - I'm very flattered!

And congrats on the 14 miler - that's wonderful. We have something in common - on my first ever 20+miler this past weekend, I also thought to myself "just keep going" when I could see the end in sight. It helped.

And ice baths are AWESOME!! I actually just use ice, not water, and wear a nice fuzzy warm bathrobe with running clothes and it seems to work. Once you go numb, it's not so bad.

Way to go girl.. Ice baths ARE awesome for soreness.

I'm so pissed. No bathroom pics? What's that all about.

I guess I'll have to swing by Marcy's blog...

You are so ready for Nike! How exciting!! It is so close! Great job on your run!

I totally thought your title said "14 miles, an ice bath and a COW" I kept reading and I thought "where is the part about the cow?"

I think I am tired...

Go you!!! I have been having hamstring issues myself! Thankfully an ice pack seems to be working so I haven't had to resort to the dreaded ice bath!
