A Great Long Run with Running Buddies

Yesterday, I met up with Karen and Christina for our long run.  Long runs with buddies always help the miles go by faster, don't they?  While on our run, we all came up with the same too-much-information-this-may-be-a-little-embarrassing-but-I'm-going-to-ask-it-anyway question.  I'm pretty sure other lady runners out there in blogland have had the same question at some point, so maybe someone can answer it for us.  Has anyone ever tried the Under Armour moisture wicking undies, (or any kind of moisture wicking undies) and do they work?  I've wanted to try them, but $20 for one pair is a bit high - especially if I don't know if they really work, you know?  :)

8 miles
931 calories burned

I finally got a copy of this today:

I had been wanting to read it for a while, and I started reading it in the bookstore and just couldn't put it down.  I started reading "The Time Traveler's Wife" a couple of days ago, but that may have to be put to the side now that I have this book.  I'll post a review when I'm done.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Hello! Long time reader, first time commener :) First off, I wear the UA compression shorts and do love to run with them, if that helps. $20+ is high, but they are comfy. I have also ready both the Time Travelers Wife & I am reading The Twilight series right now, (on book 2). The Time Travelers Wife (imho!) is the best book EVER! I love love loved it. It may be hard to get used to the "jumping", but it is SO worth the read - and Twilight? Yes..it's great. I finished I think in 2days, that's with running & knitting too! :)

Running with buddies does make those LONG runs go by... well bearably and posibly even faster in our own heads. I too have wished to try to UA undies. I think that the sacrafise of $20 once to see how they are is reasonable and if I get around to actually ordering them and trying them I'll let you know. I generally don't buy anything I can't buy at my local running store mostly because we are trying really hard to keep our $ local but I may have to make an exception here.

I so want to read that book. Maybe I should finish the other 3 I've started and not finished so far though.

The only moisture wicking undies I wear are from Title Nine and I love them. When I'm teaching phys ed or going to a yoga class. However, I never never wear undies when I run. There are built in undies in every skirt, and running knickers that I own. Also, undies can cause chaffing so I avoid!
Surprised you guys aren't talking about bowel movements- that seems to be a common theme on our runs!

that is the BEST part of running with other girls :) asking all your random girlie TMI questions :) let me know what you find out about the undies! i only really wear shorts with built in ones so havent had to try those yet.

are you doing the nike half? i thought i remember reading about that but i may be wrong??

I'm like Aron, my running gear all have built-in undies but let us know if you get the UA ones.

BTW - I read The Time Traveler's Wife this year and really enjoyed it. There's supposed to be a movie with Rachel McAdams. And I just ordered Twilight yesterday! I want to read it before that movie comes out :)

I loved Time Traveler's Wife! And I'm also a fan of running shorts with built in undies.

Despite the fact that my running shorts have built-in undies, I still prefer to wear 100% cotton underneath, which absorbs the moisture running down my back and which dries quickly enough. USD20 sounds like a bit much, but then people pay higher for less useful fashions...

I have the Time Traveler's Wife on my nightstand and I've been seeing Twilight in looks of hands as people cruise through the bakery. I just ordered An American Wife from the library!

I read The Time Traveler's Wife and loved it!

I have always wanted to try the UA underwear but they are expensive. I always wondered if they were actually comfortable or if they rode up?

No - I haven't tried moisture-wicking undies, but I saw quite a lot of DUDES yesterday who could've used them. How much moisture can they hold??

PS - thanks for the book tip. My audiobook collection is running low low low...

I am with everyone else.. When I run, I wear moisture wicking compression pants or shorts with panels. They are great. Underwear, especially if they don't fit right will cause chaffing if running long distance.
Running with buddies is great, I moved and really miss my running buddies. Great Job on the 8 miler!

I've never tried the wicking undies but they sound cool! I hope you like "Twilight," it's so easy to get sucked in!

hmmm...I am with Rachel I never wear undies cause there in my skirt or shorts. But maybe I ll have to check these out. Long runs or so much better with running buddies, not the same by yourself! I ll have to check out that book, never heard of it.

Nice run! I love those talk-about-anything conversations. And most of my shorts have built-in-undies but if they weren't I think wicking ones would be worth the cost. Wet undies are a drag and even worse when you can see the dampness through your outerwear!

Just yesterday my husband was asking me if there are moisture-wicking undies out there, and I didn't know - now thanks to you, I do!

I myself wear the running shorts with the built in undies too, like some of your other readers. Oh, and believe me, I've asked/said some of the TMI stuff with my running partner too. :-)

If you want to see more pics of Maine, I'm going to put them on my blog tonight and tomorrow if I have enough time.

I too read Time Travelers Wife. Will have to check this one out!

Running with peeps sounds great.

No help with you TMI question although I would also be interested in finding out.

Delicious, books!

What are moisture wicking undies?

Twinkle Toes said...

erm... undies for running...

erm.....nope!

I wear wicking shorts or crops... and no undies.. always commando!!!

wore undies once and chaffing was huge - NEVER again!!!

Yes, long runs do go faster with friends. As for moisture wicking stuff. I personally don't have that much luck with any of it, but that's just my opinion. If it works for the majority, its likely to work for you.

Pokey said...

Ok Eileen....we are doing this all wrong apparently!! Commando, huh? Not sure I can buy into it...but okay. I just dont think the liners in my running shorts will offer enough....ummm....support? Is that the right word? Okay, I should shut up NOW! ;)

Thanks for the great run on Saturday!!!

You guys are a hoot! I found some underwear at JCPenney that are Barely There. They are 100% nylon with a little bit of cotton added to the crotch. They are great at moisture wicking and are super comfortable. You can usually find them for $7-$9 a pair and sometimes on sale for less. I use them as my running undies and I love them. Have a good week my friend.

Pat said...

I'm sure the conversation started,
"since pat's not here, I have a girl question. . .". I just assumed you all went commando.

Sonia said...

Yes they are worth it, I will never wear cotton in any place for a run anymore!! Quick dry all the way lol!

Great job on the run! Running with friend is truly the best =)

I'm so out of the loop on modern fiction, it's not even funny. :(

I am a staunch undy wearer during my runs. However, considering how much I sweat, I think $20 is worth shelling out to see if the wicking ones work.

Great job with the run...look forward to the review!

Reserve the next week and a half o your life to finishing the "Twilight" series. I guarantee it will suck you in and you won't be satisfied until you've gobbled up all 4 books.

The Time Traveler's Wife is one of my all-time favorites! Read it before the movie comes out...movies never compare to the quality of the book!

Chic Runner said...

Running with buddies does make it go by so much faster I agree.

Though I have never worn the undies, seems like you have got some great answers. :) Good luck with that one!

1. Running seems to bring out way too-much-information between me and my running buds, but isn't it great? Sorry, haven't tried the UA panties...

2. Time Traveller's Wife is AWESOME! It takes some concentration though, but is well worth the read.

3. Have you read the other books in the Twilight series...which one should I start with?

Aka Alice said...

I agree...running buddies are THE BEST!

I don't know about the sweat-wicking undies, but I have an Underarmor running bra and it is my favorite.

I can't wait for your review of TTW. I read it a couple of years ago...and liked it a lot. It would make a great book-club book because there's lots that you'll want to talk about (I did).

I bet those runs with Karen are fun. I can NOT WAIT to run with surfer sistahs! I already started a countdown. OMG speaking of countdown 22 days til San Fran!! You are going to do awesome! Know you will have a cheerleader all the way in TX! Just so you know I have a big mouth you just might be able to hear me on mile 12

My daughter wears those undies and loves them, but I haven't tried them.

I am really happy I discovered your blog :)

Hey great question! I usually wear cotton ones, but as I add up miles, they are just not doing it for me. I've been considering the UA undies...worth the $$ I think!

First time to your blog, by the way - it's great! :-)

The moisture wicking undies are great. Cotton is more likely to chafe and can cause problems, like yeast infections. The only downside to the moisture wicking is that you have to also have black or moisture wicking running pants/shorts, otherwise you'll get an underwear outline of sweat on your pants. Super not cute.
