Now that summer is here, I'm sure we're all sporting flip flops more often. I wear them year round here in the Southwest. But after reading this article that said wearing flip flops affects your gait and can cause leg pain, I won't be wearing them anymore. I don't need foot problems or leg pain - I'm a runner! :)
My training runs this week have been productive (translation: slow but steady) and as Viv says, I'm still getting acclimated to the heat. I've tried running with a fuel belt (the kind with just one water bottle) and hated it, so I'm currently looking at other hydration methods. Not sure if any kind of belt will help me - I may just have to run with a bottle in each hand. I'll let you know how that works out after this weekend's long run.
How's everyone doing with the Independence Weight Loss Challenge? Here's some motivation for you - dropping as little as two pounds can help you run faster, according to this RW article. Check out this chart:
Happy almost weekend!
PS - I came across this video from this blog post. It's about the power of words and the hurt that words can do. It was very eye-opening, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to pass it on. Be warned - you might shed a tear or two after watching it.

Wow on the video!! TFS.
That chart is great. I want to increase my speed and know time/training will help but it is nice to see what losing the weight will do.
I wear a hydration belt--Nathan's. Mine has 2 little 10oz bottles, one at each hip side--well, more towards the back. Anyways, at first it is awkward but after 2 or 3 runs you don't notice it. If you fill the bottles over night and put them in the freezer when you run the ice will melt and you will have nice cold water :)...and less swishing at the beginning of your run.
Isela
but I HEART the flops.
whatever is a woman to do?

I'm not a flip flop girl cuz my feet can't handle it. I am jealous of those that can wear them but I just can't do it.
Loved the vid. :D
It might look goofy, but you may want to try a camelback for your water. You surely don't want to risk dehydration. I have used the amphipod bounceless belt. It really is bounceless as long as you have it cinched up snuggly. It also chafes when it is not tight enough. I would recommend it.
I was never much of a flip flop gal - I'm notorious for stubbing my toes! Keens are my summer shoe of choice. :)
Great video!
I used to be a big flop fan, but after the longer runs it is bothersome to wear them. I am loving that RW article. So, there is hope for me.
LMAO at the word of the month usage! I know the acclimating is working when i wal into the house and say it's cold.
Aww no more flip flops? :( Actually, I hadn't worn them in months (being in Alaska where it's really cold) until I got here and I have noticed some achilles tendon aggravation. I probably won't stop wearing them though :P
Ok. I hated this, but I had to do it. I started running shorter distances to and from my house/car so that I could refuel there, then go out again and come back. It was actually more tolerable than carrying lots of water, gels, food, whatever, etc. If you can believe that :P
I run with at least one bottle in my hand! I much prefer it to wearing a belt-hate wearing a belt!!!!! But I also hate the heat and others love it so who knows!!
This is great news...now if I could only get those 10 pounds off!
Thanks for all the reading this afternoon! I will have no excuse for being bored!
I have never been able to tolerate flip flops. Maybe that's good. LOL.
I use a fuel belt with 4 little bottles...balances the weight all over. I like it.
Haha, I sacrificed vanity for my running. I look like such an old soccer mom walking to work in a dress suit and sneakers, but I'm not willing to risk arch/gait problems.
As for hydration, if you don't want to carry a water bottle, you can do a bottle drop the night before. Hide it behind a tree or a rock or something, make sure it's a new bottle so if the seal has been broken, you'll know it's been tampered with. I do out-and-back routes, so sometimes I'll hold a bottle until mile 3, drop it off, and then pick it up again on my way back. =)
i just brought 4 of our kids in to watch the video; thanks so much for sharing! great motivational and reality info on the weight loss and running too. THANKS!
p.s. re. heat-- one thing you might try that really helps me is soaking a bandana with ice cold water and then wadding up and carrying it in one hand. may face gets very overheated and it feels really refreshing to wipe down with that every once in awhile . . .
I have the same problems with my hydration belt, it bothers my stomach while I am running, I do not want it there, so I have been researching other options. My current plan is to get a camelback pack. I think I would have to like it better on my back than pushing on my stomach. I have found that during distances longer than 13 miles... I can't take the pressure.
As for the flip flops... I have plantar facia problems and can't wear them, but my PT just found a brand called "soles" that heat mold into custom orthotic shoes... I am excited to get my pair and know that I can have my summer shoes, without destroying my feet.
Great Video!
I couldn't agree more on the flip flops. I love them but they are no good for my feet. I have foot and ankle issues from wearing them day in and day out.
Well, gee.... thanks for making me cry!
I carry one water bottle (with a handle) and make stops back at my car to refill - or sometimes at gas stations, depending on the route. During a race, it is great, because I just refill at every water stop, and don't have to have the skill necessary to drink out of a little paper cup while moving.
I wear the fuel belt for long runs in this heat. It does take a bit of getting used to but it works for me. Phil that you met at the 5k stashes water bottles on his run. You might try that if you don't want to carry anything.
As for flip flops two years ago I started wearing sandals from skechers. Most of them have arch support so I can have open toes and not kill my feet. It's funny you posted that because just yesterday I was telling someone that I can't wear flip flops anymore!
You always have the most useful info for us!!
Wow...I like to run and each pound helps! Thanks for the post!
Wow you already have a lot of comments about this, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents as well. I started using the camelbak hydration belt a couple of weeks ago and it has really worked well for me. It holds 28 oz and all the styles have pockets to hold keys and gels. I love it because it's really easy to drink out of while running.
Also, I had to give up my flops most days too. If I'm walking a long distance I can't wear them at all because they hurt my knees and legs. It's such a bummer though when it's 103 outside.
